DOHA: Total Research Centre Qatar (TRC-Q) recently conducted a one-day training programme for all engineers and researchers on the topic of solar energy to educate about maximizing energy production while reducing land usage, a press statement said yesterday.

This exclusive event was a unique opportunity for energy operators interested in gaining a clear understanding of opportunities and challenges for the Qatar Solar Market, and to gather deep knowledge about the different available solar technologies, as well as their efficiency and reliability.

Participants were also explained about the different solar solutions for commercial applications, and the best practices for building and financing large complex solar projects, maximizing energy production while reducing land usage.

Internationally recognised technical experts from Total, and Sunpower, one of the world’s leading energy operators, and in which Total has 66 percent stake, delivered presentations on solar resources, including the estimation of solar radiation based on a satellite data, as well as the application of Photovoltaic (PV) technology to off-grid systems, roof-top and ground mounted plants.

A review of solar technologies including the PV technology in general, and the mono-crystalline back-contact technology was also conducted.

Philippe Julien, Director of TRC-Q said: “We are delighted to celebrate our Solar Energy Technical Day, to better understand solar energies, their reliablity and cost-effectiveness. Promoting alternative energy continues to be at the forefront of our environmental initiatives, as Total looks to invest in research for a promising future with this form of energy”.

Stephane Michel, Managing Director of Total E&P Qatar added: “One of Total’s key long term goals is to meet energy demands while lessening the impact of energy use on climate change. Our commitment to this long term goal, as well as to Qatar’s vision on the future of energy, is supported by our partnership with SunPower, as we work towards delivering high efficiency and reliability solar technologies which save up to 50% more energy than conventional panels.”
