DOHA: Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) is inviting members of the local MICE industry to workshops that will enable them to lay a strong foundation for conference business and win bids for large events.
The first workshop ‘Building International Conference Business for Your Venue’ will be held on February 28 at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre and is open to directors and general managers of hotels and other venues. It will shed light on how venues can develop capabilities to attract international conferences and deliver practical techniques to help strengthen the venue’s sales, marketing and servicing approach.
The second workshop ‘Successful Bidding’ will be held on February 29 and open to managers and directors in the events industry, including professional conference organisers, destination management companies, MICE venues, hotels, travel agencies and event management agencies.
It will provide tips on developing a compelling bid strategy to secure the right to host international conferences and sell Qatar as a leading business events destination.
The sessions will be delivered by Gaining Edge, a global consulting firm that specialises in business events, whose work focuses on enhancing the performance and sustainability of the global meetings industry.
Qatar has witnessed a substantial increase in activity in the business meetings and exhibitions sector, with over 80 conferences and exhibitions confirmed so far to this year.
QTA’s strategy to increase the number of visitors by 20 percent over the next five years places emphasis on business events as a priority sector to achieve the target.
A key pillar of the strategy is to empower the private sector to attract and host global events by providing highest level of training and access to expertise. QTA also works to build an understanding of international conference associations in the local industry and increase the number of Qatar-based members in International Conference and Convention Association.  Recent estimates show that exhibitions in Qatar last year attracted 286,000 visitors, 14 percent of whom were international and featured close to 5,000 companies, half of which were international. The Peninsula
