The Central Municipal Council (CMC) yesterday recommended to explore the possibility of allocating special lanes for public buses and to build air-conditioned bus stations.
The recommendations will be submitted to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and the Ministry of Transport and Communication. The CMC recommended to find out the possibility of allocating special lanes for public transports to head to their destination on time and build air-conditioned bus stations fulfilling security and safety requirements.
The recommendation was based on suggestion made by the member Mohammed bin Ali Al Azbah, representative of constituency No 12, where he pointed out that, the previous urban planning did not take into account the importance of public transport. Having effective public transport could contribute positively to the use of private cars, environment and traffic safety said Al Azbah.
Al Azbah pointed out that the use of a bus with 60 passengers will keep 60 cars out of the road while passengers will reach their destinations easily and safely, saving money and efforts.
The proposed dedicated bus lanes should link the populated areas and all vital destinations and gradually cover all parts of the country.The authorities concerned may need to impose fine on other motorists using the bus lanes, said the CMC.
Another recommendation passed during the 26th session was directed to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to allocate lands for establishment of farms to be distributed to the citizens and the distribution of plots among livestock breeders to establish barns.
Land plots allocated for farms must not be less than 5000 sqm and near to main roads in a well studded areas said the recommendation. This recommendation was based on suggestion made by Hamad bin Lahdan Al Muhannadi, Vice Chairman of the Council and representative of constituency no 26. The Services and Facilities Committee of the council invited Khalifa Al Ansari, head of agriculture section at the Ministry of Municipality who emphasized that the Ministry gives much priorities to agriculture and providing with necessary support to increase local production, and its marketing, consultations and encouraging use of modern technology.
Al Ansari said the ministry is ready to implement any plan similar to the complexes of barns for agriculture if the government allocated the required land plots.
