DOHA: ‘Careem’, a leading mobile application-based taxi booking service, has formally started operations in Qatar by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The MoU follows recent moves by authorities to regulate the rapidly expanding transportation industry.
‘Careem’ is also the first taxi booking mobile app to formally enter business in Qatar, a statement said yesterday.
Sheikh Hamad bin Ghanim Al Thani, Director, Quality Performance Department,  Land Transportation Services Division at the ministry; and Ibrahim Manna, General Manager, ‘Careem’, signed the MoU.
“We have been proactively working with the ministry to understand regulations set forth and ensure that we are fully compliant,” said Manna.
“Our passion at ‘Careem’ is simplifying the lives of people by providing them with a reliable, safe and affordable means of transportation. With the signing of the MoU, we will continue to follow this passion as we move forward and expand operations,” he added.
Passengers can make requests for immediate or late scheduled rides through the app. To book a cab, passengers need to log in to the website or use the mobile app and choose between booking a car for an immediate journey or schedule a ride for later by selecting a date and time. They can also call or email ‘Careem.’
According to an estimate by the ‘Careem’ website, their cabs  from Hamad International Airport to the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Convention Hotel would cost QR82.
A passenger will be charged a starting fare of QR18 to travel in a regular cab and QR27 in a premium cab.
Dubai-based ‘Careem’  started operations in July 2012. With three million registered users to date from more than 28 cities in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) and Pakistan, along with an increasing fleet of over 50,000 drivers referred to as captains, ‘Careem’ is re-inventing the current state of transportation.
In Qatar, it has seen 30 percent monthly growth, the statement said.
