New Delhi, India: India on Sunday celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga.
The main event of the yoga celebration was held in the eastern city of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led thousands of people in performing the morning exercises at Kolkata's Red Road.
"Yoga is not merely a form of physical exercise and cannot be confined to any particular age group. It is a source of consciousness, vitality and inner illumination that enriches every stage of human life," Modi said, adding it offers a pathway to remain healthy, active and energetic even as one grows older.
According to Modi, the International Day of Yoga provides an opportunity to renew a collective commitment towards making yoga an integral part of everyday life.
In 2014, the United Nations passed a resolution, announcing June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Yoga is an ancient physical and mental practice that originated in India. It is now practiced in various forms worldwide and continues to gain popularity.
