Shanghai stocks jump on MSCI call, buck Asia retreat

Hong Kong: Chinese stocks bucked an Asia-wide trend Wednesday to end higher after index compiler MSCI agreed to include high-cap, mainland-listed shares in its benchmark of emerging markets.

The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.52 percent, or 16.20 points, to 3,156.21, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, gained 0.43 percent, or 8.13 points, to 1,887.19.

But in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index fell 0.57 percent, or 148.46 points, to 25694.58.
