DOHA: The Primary Healthcare Corporation (PHCC) said yesterday that it will soon introduce psychotherapy clinics at Leabaib health centre, and a “beautiful smile” project to promote oral health, along with several other new services. Opened in December last year, the centre is the first of its kind in Qatar combing health and wellness.
The psychotherapy clinics will be limited for treatment of moderate cases of mental illness such as moderate stress and depression, through medication or psychological therapy sessions, said Dr Mona Al Sa’adi of PHCC. Advanced cases of mental illness will be referred to Hamad General Hospital, she added.
Dr Mona said that “beautiful smile” project will be launched after a few days. This is an ambitious project that aims at raising awareness about mouth and teeth health, and reduce the high rate of tooth decay among children in Qatar.
The project focuses on two categories- pregnant women and children from birth to age five. Children will get to know the specialist model for care of children’s teeth under the name “Speciality Clinics”, which includes paediatric dentistry specialist to provide health services for children in this early period of life.
Other programs to be implemented at the centre in the near future include an early screening programme to detect breast and colon cancer, through encouraging the women at the age of 45 or older.
The programme will also encourage both men and women at the age of 50 years and above for early detection of bowel cancer through chemical tests that are performed quickly and safely and without pain.
Dr Mona added that the family doctor service will be introduced first the at Leabaib health centre and will be expanded to all health centres according to a specific timetable.
A certain number of individuals and families will be referred to a specific family doctor, who will have a full knowledge of the family medical history, and the doctor will work to motivate them to take preventive actions through early detection of diseases that may threaten their lives.
Dr Mona has said that 9000 people have registered in the centre since its opening on December 13 last year. The target number for the first year is 10,000 while the centre has a capacity of 50,000 visitors. The centre receives more than 290 visitors a day.
It is the first health centre of its kind in the Qatar for health and wellness. It has a swimming pool, gym, sauna and massage as well as other health services, along with a Medical Commission unit and other medical units.
Most people visiting the centre are not suffering from diseases or complications of any kind, because it is dedicated to promoting preventive health and wellness.
