Doha: Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation, has invited those interested in Islamic philosophy and history to a seminar on the life and contributions of the Muslim scientist Ibn Sina.
The event, organised through the Muhammad bin Hamad Al Thani Centre for Muslim Contribution to Civilisation at HBKU’s Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), will take place tomorrow on from noon to 2pm at the auditorium of the QFIS building in Education City.
Also known as Avicenna, Ibn Sina is known for his contributions to astronomy, logic, medicine, music, philosophy, physics, poetry and psychology.
His life and work will be commented upon by experts, including Dr Abdalhakeem Alkhelaifi, Professor of Islamic Philosophy, Qatar University, Dr Yahya Michot, Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations, Hartford Seminary, US, and Dr Syed Nomanul Haq, Professor and Adviser for Social Sciences and Liberal Arts, Institute of Business Administration, Pakistan.
The seminar will provide attendees with opportunity to learn about one of the world’s most influential thinkers, whose contributions extend far beyond the Islamic World.
Sina’s Al Qanun fi Al Tibb (The Canon of Medicine) was used well into the 17th century, and his Kitab Al Shifa, regarded as his magnum opus, remains an important work of philosophy and science.
Dr Aisha Al Mannai, Director of the centre, said: “We consider it an honour to be able to remember this great son of human civilisation and recount his academic feats through the lens of three Islamic specialists.”
“In line with HBKU’s aim to cultivate knowledge and support community development, the talk will highlight Sina’s life as a reminder of the Islamic Golden Age, pointing to the vast potential found throughout the region.”
For details about the event, featuring Arabic and English interpretation, and to register, please contact [email protected]. The Peninsula
