ANKARA: Sixteen Islamic State positions were hit by Turkish military aircraft in northern Syria as part of Operation Euphrates Shield, the Turkish military said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Turkish General Staff said the land and air operation was carried in the Al-Bab area.

Fighter jets destroyed 16 targets while a Turkish armed drone hit an armed pickup truck used by Is.

Moreover, the Turkish military’s explosive ordnance disposal teams destroyed 53 handmade explosives in the liberated areas near Al-Bab, a strategic city for IS.

The statement said the operation to liberate Al-Bab was going according to plan.

Tuesday marks the 119th day of Operation Euphrates Shield, which began in late August to improve security, support coalition forces, and eliminate the terror threat along Turkey’s border using Free Syrian Army fighters backed by Turkish artillery, and jets. Over 225 residential areas in northern Syria, including more than 1,860 square kilometers (700 square miles) of land, have so far been cleared of IS terrorists under the operation.
