DOHA: Qatar yesterday called on the international community to spare no efforts to stop violations and crimes perpetrated by the Syrian regime and compel it to reach a political solution to end the crisis and meet the Syrian people’s aspirations and legitimate demands for freedom, dignity and justice.
This came in Qatar’s speech delivered by Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Henzab, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organisations Office in  Geneva.
He was speaking  a session on the ‘Interactive Dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic’ held within the framework of Item No. 4 of the 33rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council.
He said the international community should not count on its commitment to implement the agreements, referring to the Commission’s fact-finding on the violation of the February 2016 cessation of hostilities agreement, by the regime and its allies through indiscriminate and disproportionate aerial bombardments of civilian populated areas.
He urged all honest people all over the world to stand against the Syrian regime’s insistence on putting obstacles to implementation of the ceasefire agreement, which includes aid deliveries in Syria’s besieged cities, stopping violations and war crimes committed by the regime daily and compel it to reach a political solution to end the crisis, meet legitimate aspirations and demands of the Syrian people for freedom, dignity and justice and contribute to building Syria’s future as a democratic country in implementation of the Geneva I Communiqué and United Nations Security Council’s resolutions.
The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria was set up by the Council in 2011 to investigate human rights violations during the conflict, Al Henzab explained.
Reports of the Commission revealed war crimes and crimes against humanity since 2011 and identified the perpetrators, he said, expressing disappointment with the international community, especially the Security Council’s failure to ensure criminal justice in the light of the grave violations in Syria, including the use of chemical weapons. Such an attitude has resulted in further abuse against the Syrian people and damaged the credibility of the UN, he added. QNA
