Doha: The Sri Lankan community in Qatar celebrated its 70th Independence Day which fell on February 4, with a cultural programme  recently at Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). 

The event was organised by the  Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha in collaboration with Sri Lanka Coordinating Committee Qatar.  Sri Lankan Ambassador. A S P Liyanage, was the chief guest. Also present were Dr R Seetharaman, Chief Executive Officer, Doha Bank; R. Kohularangan, Minister Counsellor, Embassy of Sri Lanka; Balakrishnan Pirathapan, Country Manager SriLankan Airlines, as well as officials from Public Relations Department at the Ministry of Interior.  The event featured lighting of the traditional oil lamp, speeches by dignitaries, presentation of Awards of Excellence and unveiling of the 70th Independence Day souvenir. 

The ‘Pathum Danansooriya Cultural Ensemble’ who were flown in from Sri Lanka for the first time for the celebrations and performed many traditional  dance and drumming items.  Sri Lankan  singer Tissa Jayawardana also performed during the celebrations.  Ooredoo was the Platinum sponsor of the event together with St. Regis Doha as the hospitality partner.
