A large and powerful typhoon moved across Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu today, leaving two people dead and more than dozen injured.
According to Kyodo News website, Typhoon Nanmadol is expected to travel northeast along the main island of Honshu through Tuesday, with the Japan Meteorological Agency continuing to warn of violent winds, high tides and mudslides across western to northern Japan.
Around noon Monday, the 14th typhoon of the season was moving northeast near Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in western Japan at a speed of some 20 kilometers an hour.
It had an atmospheric pressure of 975 hectopascals at its center, packing winds of up to 108 kph with maximum gusts of 162 kph.
After issuing a special typhoon warning to expect unprecedented winds and waves in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures in southwestern Japan on Sunday, the weather agency has downgraded its warning level.
