Margarita Island, Venezuela: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud said that the magnitude of the humanitarian disaster in Syria and the serious consequences of the continuing crisis on the security and stability of the region and the world require Non-Aligned Movement’s (NAM) strong positions in support of international efforts to reach a political solution according to the Geneva-1 communique.
The Deputy Prime Minister was addressing the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Margarita Island, Venezuela, yesterday.

Margarita Island, Venezuela: The continuing humanitarian crisis in Syria and its serious consequences on the security and stability of the region require a strong position from the Non-Aligned Movement in support of international efforts to reach a political solution according to the Geneva-1 communiqué, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud.
Addressing the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Margarita Island, Venezuela, he said the State of Qatar is at the forefront of countries providing humanitarian assistance to Syrian people, and will continue supporting without any hesitation and make every effort to end the crisis and bring a political solution that enhances security and stability in the region.
Al Mahmoud pointed out that the continued crisis of Syria represents an international failure and has made the majority of Syrians depend on humanitarian assistance because of the systematic policy of besieging civilians and depriving them of basic needs. The Syrian regime used all types of weapons that killed nearly half a million innocent civilians and displaced millions inside and outside Syria.
It’s of particular concern the outcomes announced at the end of last August by the joint investigation between the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the UN mechanism established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2235 (2015) which confirmed that the Syrian regime and ISIS group used chemical weapons in Syria, he pointed out.
He urged the international community to protect the Syrian people and bring all those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria to justice.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasised that the pursuit of the movement since its inception to achieve a world of equality, justice and stability is fully compatible with the policy of Qatar and its efforts at the international level. Qatar will continue its efforts as an active member in the movement to fulfill its responsibilities and obligations to the just causes of the non-aligned movement. Al Mahmoud said Qatar appreciates the Non-Aligned Movement’s support for the Palestinian cause, under the continuing Israeli occupation and denial of Palestinian people’s rights.
He highlighted Qatar’s support for international efforts to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab peace initiative,
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs also reiterated Qatar’s firm position in support of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people, on the basis of a two-state solution to put an end to Israeli occupation of all Arab territories and stop settlement activities.
Referring to the Yemeni crisis, Al Mahmoud emphasised that Qatar is committed to working within the framework of the GCC and the international community to reach a final solution to the crisis based on a Yemeni national consensus and based on the Gulf initiative and the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference and in implementation of Security Council Resolution 2216 and related resolutions. Qatar will continue its humanitarian support to Yemen in cooperation with the United Nations and national, regional and international relief organisations.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that Qatar has been keen to cooperate and work with partners in the NAM to promote security and stability in the world and support efforts to combat terrorism.  The Peninsula
