DOHA: Construction work on the new National Metrological Centre in Abu Hamour will begin by the end of this year, a senior official of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment said yesterday.
The new center specializing in standards and measurements will serve different sectors including health, commerce and business, and oil and gas, among others, Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, Assistant Undersecretary for standards and specifications at the ministry said.
“Technical and construction studies for the new national metrological centre has been completed. The event was attended by senior officials from the organisation and the ministry inspectors.
The centre will be a place for researchers and consultants in metrological measurements, and will be registered in international research centres, he added.
The centre will be equipped with the latest devices in metrology. The Organisation signed an agreement, two months ago, with a metrological centres in France in this regard, and has a plan to send Qatari employees to France to get a practical training in standards and measurement.

National ‘Metrological Centre vital’

Earlier, in his opening address, Al Kuwari stressed the importance of establishing a national metrological centre in Qatar, saying all the developed countries consider it as one of pillars of scientific progress.

May 20 is marked as World Metrology Day, when 17 nations signed the Treaty of the Metre in Paris on 20 May 20, 1875.
Al Kuwari said that Qatar this year made a major achievement, when it became member of International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) after it signed an international agreement for mutual recognition in measurements.
Saleh Salim Al Rumaihi, Director of the Central Laboratories Department at the ministry, said that Qatar’s achievements include issuance a new law on Qatari measurements to cope with international developments in this field, which also helped Qatar to become a CIPM member.
