March: Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) has completed the second phase of the project to rehabilitate and operate the 22 May Primary Health Care Center in Al-Mudhaffar District, the Taiz Governorate, Yemen.
Done in cooperation with the Yemen Medical Charitable Society (YMCS), the project cost $110,000 (QR 400,000), funded by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).
Since its reopening in August 2016, the center has received 23,932 patients. The rehabilitated departments are pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, dentistry, reproductive health & family planning, malnutrition, and vaccination.
The project revived the hopes of the local community, who had lost the only source of medical treatment with the closure of the center. In coordination with the center's management, QRCS conducted a quick development plan to run the center till May 2017.
In a statement, Ilan Abdel-Haq, Director of Health Bureau, Taiz Governorate, welcomed the efforts by QRCS to support Taiz public health facilities, which helped improve the almost broken-down health system. "I hope that the generous support from the State of Qatar would continue for the benefit of the poor local community," she added.
Dr. Helal Ali, the center's supply manager, said, "Thanks God, all the center's departments are now functional. We serve all visitors, using the medical equipment and consumables provided by QRCS. We appeal for more contributions for the patients, who suffer unfavorable health and economic conditions".
The beneficiaries were very happy with the re-operation of the center. The mother of Soliman Daoud, who suffered a severe malnutrition, said, "You have given new life to my son. May God protect you and everyone in Qatar. We thank the Emir of Qatar and all those who work to save the lives of Yemeni people. We love the people of Qatar".
According to the mother of Maram Abdullah, who had pyoderma gangrenosum in her thigh, the State of Qatar is the only country that serves people sincerely without media show-up, providing treatment for the patients free of charge.
