The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ), the school of nursing, officially opened a new building at its Al Rayyan campus on Furousiya Road recently.
The new annexe building includes classrooms, labs, and student spaces that will allow the university to improve the learning experience for students and possibly expand classes and programmes in the future.
Adrian Norfolk, Ambassador of Canada to Qatar, and Abdullah Al Shafei, Coordinator Director, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, representatives of the Ministry of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, and the College of the North Atlantic – Qatar were present during the opening of the new building.
“It’s always exciting to see this kind of investment in the future of health care education,” said UCQ Dean and CEO Dr Deborah White.
“Qatar has set ambitious goals for health and human development in Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Health Strategy. UCQ is committed to doing all we can to support those goals — this expansion is a significant step in that journey.”
The new building provides more than 2,300 square metres of additional classroom and laboratory space. It also includes study and social space for students and office space for students in Master of Nursing programmes.
Each classroom features a state-of-the-art educational technology system and flexible classroom space that allows for multiple class sizes and configurations.
With the additional space, UCQ now has the potential to accommodate up to 1,000 students, as resources allow.
UCQ is accepting applications from Qatari nationals and residents to its undergraduate and graduate nursing programmes through March 1.
