Stockholm: SWEDEN’S Moderate party yesterday called for the four parties of centre-right opposition to put forward a common budget, which would effectively bring down the coalition government if supported by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.
Mainstream politicians have so far refused to have anything to do with the Sweden Democrats party, which has its roots in far-right fringe. But Moderate leader Anna Kinberg Batra said her party was now prepared to bring down the coalition with its support.
The minority Social Democrat and Green Party coalition has been able to govern since 2014 because the opposition cannot form a majority government without Sweden Democrats, who command more than 20 percent support in opinion polls.
“In questions where there are the conditions for agreement, I do not think we should exclude building a majority with the Sweden Democrats,” Batra told reporters.
However, she ruled out forming a coalition with the Sweden Democrats or including them in preparing an Alliance budget.
“But again, I do not want to begin talks on forming a government ... or budget negotiations,” she said.
