NEW YORK: Outfielder Melky Cabrera signed a three-year, $42m contract with the Chicago White Sox, it was announced yesterday.
The 30-year-old had a .301 batting average with 35 doubles, 16 home runs, 73 RBIs, 81 runs scored, 54 extra-base hits and a .351 on-base percentage last season with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Meanwhile, slugger Michael Morse signed a two-year deal with the Miami Marlins worth $8m including incentives.
Morse, who is from Broward County, is projected as a first baseman with the Marlins.
He spent last season with the San Francisco Giants and batted .300 in the postseason, mostly as a pinch-hitter.
Left-hander Chris Capuano re-signed with the New York Yankees for one year, the team announced.
The 36-year-old will receive a one-year, $5m contract, according to a CBSSports.com report.
In other updates for the Major League Baseball yesterday, the Colorado Rockies reached agreement with infielder Daniel Descalso on a two-year, $3.6m contract.
The 28-year-old Descalso batted .244 with no home runs and 10 RBIs in 104 games last season for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has a career batting average of .243 with 10 homers and 111 RBIs in 529 games.
The LA Angels traded right-handed relief pitcher Kevin Jepsen to the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Kevin Joyce.
Joyce batted .254 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs in 140 games last season for Rays. Jepsen had a 0-2 record with a career-best 2.63 ERA in 65 innings.
With third baseman Chase Headley signing a four-year contract with the New York Yankees on Monday, it appears that Alex Rodriguez will be relegated to designated hitter duties when he returns next spring.AGENCIES
