Bucharest: Eight people were killed and scores more were reported injured after a powerful storm struck western Romania on Sunday afternoon.

Trees were uprooted, buildings were damaged and street signs were overturned by the storm in the Timisoara region, local daily Adevarul showed in pictures on it website.

More than 60 people were injured in the storm, the newspaper said.

A number of regions complained of power outages while train lines were also disrupted.

Former Romanian president Traian Basescu told Romania TV that the storm was due to climate change.

"These are the costs of our foolishness because we manage to destroy and pollute the atmosphere in the name of development," he said.
