Doha: Ooredoo yesterday announced the soft launch of its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network, as the company continues to enhance and expand its nationwide Supernet.
The launch, which is another key step in the company’s Supernet strategy, will place Qatar on a list of a handful of countries in the world supporting VoLTE service.
Ooredoo anticipates strong demand, particularly as the number of VoLTE-compatible devices continues to grow this year.
VoLTE will enable customers to make crystal clear HD voice calls over the 4G data network and provide faster call setup.
Customers will also be able to switch between ongoing voice calls and high-quality video calls as they want.
They will be able to browse the Internet on the 4G network while on a call — the first time they are able to do this.
Waleed Al Sayed, CEO, Ooredoo Qatar, said: “Since we began the trial of VoLTE in 2015, we have seen positive results across our network.
“In addition to the incredible quality of service provided to customers using VoLTE-compatible devices, we will also see improvements for 3G and 4G service customers, as more traffic is carried on the LTE network, and particularly as more voice services migrate to the higher speed, higher capacity LTE bandwidth.”
To provide these benefits to end users, Ooredoo is working with the world’s largest device manufacturers on a pipeline of VoLTE devices to ensure that VoLTE-enabled smartphones are certified and available in Qatar. Implementation of VoLTE is based on software-defined data centre architecture and a range of cutting-edge technologies, including network function virtualisation and software-defined networking.
The launch of VoLTE puts Ooredoo in a leadership position on the global innovation path towards fully-converged information communication technology (ICT).
Ooredoo launched HD Voice on its mobile network in 2012, and has been constantly improving call quality across the country. VoLTE HD voice quality will further enhance the quality of calls.
The company continues to enhance and upgrade the Ooredoo Supernet as part of its vision to make Qatar the best-connected country in the world. Its evolutionary approach to the Ooredoo Supernet, which sees the company continue to introduce cutting-edge technology and expand capacity, delivers a superior experience every month.
