NEW YORK: Derek Jeter drove a single just past the outstretched glove of second baseman Logan Forsythe to score Brett Gardner from second base in the top of the ninth inning and the New York Yankees edged the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday at Tropicana Field.
The Yankees ended a five-game skid overall, tied for their longest of the season, and a five-game losing streak to the Rays. Starting pitchers Drew Smyly of the Rays and Shane Greene of the Yankees were both effective, but neither figured in the final decision.
Giants 6, Phillies 5
Rookie Joe Panik tripled and scored on Gregor Blanco’s single in the eighth inning, capping a comeback that lifted San Francisco past Philadelphia.
The loss was the third in four games for the Phillies on their five-game California swing that concludes today.
Marlins 2, Diamondbacks 1
Marcell Ozuna scored the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning to lead Miami to a win over Arizona at Marlins Park. Arizona were charged with five errors and the winning run was unearned.
Indians 6, Orioles 0
Carlos Carrasco pitched seven scoreless innings and Carlos Santana and Michael Brantley homered to lead Cleveland to a shutout win over former teammate Ubaldo Jimenez and Baltimore at Progressive Field.
In just his second start since re-entering the rotation after spending three months in the bullpen, Carrasco (5-4) gave up three hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. In his two starts since re-joining the rotation, Carrasco has pitched 12 scoreless innings on five hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Twins 4, Royals 1
Phil Hughes pitched 7-1/3 innings and received some timely offensive support as Minnesota defeated Kansas City at Target Field. Hughes and Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura were locked in a duel throughout the game. Ventura did not give up many hits but allowed six walks.
Each time Ventura was in trouble, he escaped - until a three-run seventh inning. Hughes did not walk a batter and struck out six, allowing one run and seven hits, including six singles.
