Hong Kong: Shanghai stocks closed lower on Monday, as market sentiment was hit by criticism from regulators over speculative trading and concerns over geopolitical issues.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.74 percent, or 23.90 points, to 3,222.17 while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, dropped 1.41 percent, or 28.10 points, to 1,958.55.

Hong Kong was closed for a holiday.
