With participation of over 220 representatives of governments, UN missions, international organisations, human right institutions and experts, an international conference will take place in Doha from February 20 to 22.
The conference under the theme “Approaches to Human Rights Under Conflicts in the Arab Region” will be organised by the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and UN Commission on Human Rights.
The conference will bring together human rights and humanitarian organisations and dispute resolution centres, along with representatives of peace keeping missions, UN and international agencies, said NHRC Secretary-General Mariam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah.
The conference aims to enhance approaches based on human rights to confront conflicts, and crises, set up dialogue and communication channels to prevent conflicts from changing into armed conflicts, he added.
The conference will discuss developing of post conflict strategies, exchange of good practices, means of cooperation between relevant entities, ways to enhance rule of law and protect human rights, said Al Attiyah.
The conference will be divided into two parts- interactive dialogue on strategies of integrating human rights and policies in UN international strategies to confront violence, extremism and terrorism.
The second part of the conference will feature four technical groups to find out means of integrating human rights with conflict prevention and coordination of UN efforts with national human rights institutions and civil society organizations. The technical groups will also discuss protection of the rights of children, women and minority groups under conflicts and the impact of armed conflicts on the right to education.
The ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa has triggered the idea of the conference, said Al Attiyah, stressing the importance of cooperation between government and non government institutions in the protection of human rights and rule of law.
