DOHA: The Health Control Department of Al Rayyan Municipality yesterday issued directives on food safety for picnics and camping as this is a favourite time for people to camp in the desert.
The department has stressed the need to follow guidelines for food safety during picnics and camping to maintain public health and ensure safety.
The guidelines include: Selecting dry, canned food of long-term validity and its adequate storage requirements; use of small containers of certain foods such as jams and cheeses as campers have to use dry or canned milk of small sizes, said the department in instructions published on the ministry’s Facebook page.
The department also stressed the importance of preparing fresh foods in small quantities for instant consumption and disposal of the remnants at once.
Campers are also urged to separate meat, poultry and uncooked fish from vegetables, fruits and cooked meals.
In case of using frozen food, they have to ensure it is completely frozen, so that it looks extremely solid prior to initiating the journey making sure that they have sufficient quantities of ice in the ice box to preserve perishable food.
The department has advised campers to use disposable utensils — spoons, plates, forks and cups and sterilised napkins and disinfectants for disinfecting the hands. The Peninsula
