Qatar University team Gernas from College of Engineering (CENG) recently won second-place in the GTL category of the recent Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) Asia 2014 which was held in Manila, Philippines this year. Another participating CENG team placed 9th in the event with a battery-operated vehicle.
The two CENG teams joined over 100 students comprising 38 teams from 15 countries in Asia and the Middle East in the eco-marathon.  The event was an opportunity for student teams to design and build energy-efficient vehicles and compete to drive the furthest on the equivalent of one litre of fuel. Gernas came in second driving 75.2km behind Monash University at 116.6km.
The second-place winners comprised Ajad Hossain Howlader, Noor Alam Chowdhury, Abdulkader Sakil, Amal Fareed Hassan, Ayat Rebhi Al Aswad, Nada Ahmed Hussein, and Yasmeen Iyad Saleh from the Electrical Engineering Department.  The other team comprised Ahmad Abu Hassanein, Ahmad Mohammed Abu Sultan, Abidbaqir  Zulqarnain Baqir, Jassim Al Thani, Khalid Ali Al Qahtani, Mohaamed Abdulhadi Al Kurbi, Luma Jehad Ahalabi, and Roa Jehad Shalabi from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department.
Applauding the students’ achievement, CENG Dean Dr Rashid Al Ammari said: “This comes soon after our students’ success in the recent GCC hybrid-car Grand Prix. This is a testament to the enriching teaching and learning environment at QU which enhances students’ enthusiasm for innovation and their ability to effectively translate what they learn in the classroom into tangible award-winning inventions.”
CENG Associate Dean for Development and Industrial Relations Dr Saud Ghani said: “This achievement showcases our students’ hard work, determination and competitive spirit which have resulted in many successes in vehicle design and racing events.”
Commenting on their achievement, Team Gernas member Yasmeen Iyad said: “During the week of the competition, I witnessed engineering skills at an advanced level that are needed to become a successful engineer. Both teams were highly motivated to achieve the best results.”
