The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has joined the global Movember awareness campaign, promoting its cancer screening efforts in Qatar.
Following October’s Breast Cancer Awareness, PHCC, through the national Breast and Bowel Screening Programme “The Screen for Life,” will be focusing on bowel cancer screening. The campaign throughout the month of November will be targeting Qatar’s female and male eligible population and encouraging bowel screening.
The Movember is an annual event to raise awareness of various cancers. The goal of Movember is to "change the face of men's health."
“Bowel cancer remains one of the two leading forms of cancers threatening the health of Qatar’s population and it is important for us to utilise global campaigns such as Movember to further raise awareness and reiterate the importance of undergoing bowel screening,” said Dr Shaikha Abu Shaikha, Cancer Programme Manager, PHCC.
“The Screen for Life” programme has made considerable efforts in reaching the local community and we are keen to build on this to increase the effectiveness of our efforts. We are dedicated to providing the highest in medical care standards and health services for Qatar’s citizens and through such initiatives we are able to continue these efforts,” she said.
According to the American Cancer Society, the survival rate from bowel cancer rises to 90 percent when detected at an early stage.
PHCC has urged those aged between 50 and 74, who do not present any related symptoms, to undertake bowel cancer screening on an annual basis. One can call PHCC’s dedicated call center number, 800 1112, to arrange for an appointment in advance to avoid waiting times.
