ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-N government plans to hold election to fill the posts of chairmen of 17 standing committees of the National Assembly next week, official sources said here yesterday.

The official record shows that chairpersons of eleven National Assembly standing committees have so far been elected and seventeen committees are still without chiefs so the government decided to fill the slots at the earliest.

“Chairpersons of nine committees would come from the ruling party and eight would be elected from the opposition parties. The government has prepared the list of nine names who would contest for the unfilled slots while the opposition parties are yet to take decision in this respect,” he said.

According to media reports three political parties “Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party, Altaf Hussain’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf”  have sent a letter to Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq and requested him to delay the election of heads of the standing committees to be headed by their members of the National Assembly.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Aftab Ahmad said yesterday the government first decided to hold election of chairpersons of the standing committees this week but it deferred the plan on the request of the opposition parties.

“We have finalised the names on our part and now it is up to the opposition parties to move forward their names for the slots of chairpersons. Now we are all set to ensure election of chairpersons of the remaining 17standing committees next week,” he said.
