DOHA: The National Diabetes Registry, which was launched yesterday, will gather details about people with the disease and compile statistics about diabetes healthcare in Qatar.
The registry launched to coincide with World Diabetes Day and the data will help health care authorities to monitor treatment outcomes and enable comparison, knowledge sharing and improvement between different entities, said officials.
Operating through 23 primary health care centres throughout Qatar, PHCC will be sharing the common diabetes registry with SCH, HMC and QDA to register people with diabetes.
The initiative by the Action on Diabetes (AoD) will be implemented together with Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), Supreme Council of Health (SCH), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Qatar Diabetes Association — member of Qatar Foundation (QDA), Maersk Oil and Novo Nordisk.
Addressing a press conference at Katara, Dr Mohamed Al Thani, Director of Public Health at the Supreme Council of Health, said: “AoD has achieved a great deal in the two years since its launch, most notably the launching of a Qatar National Diabetes Registry. For the first time, the comprehensive registry brings together healthcare professionals in the country and enables us to start making statistics about diabetes healthcare in Qatar, benefiting patients by improving healthcare outcomes.”
PHCC is currently taking part in the National Diabetes Registry pilot project with SCH and QDA. Feedback from this pilot has been gathered and the pilot phase is now proceeding into a broader rollout.
The National Diabetes Registry will be introduced to healthcare providers countrywide as an online tool making it easy to maintain and access for all healthcare professionals.
The registry has been funded by Maersk Oil Qatar as part of its long-term commitment to the Action on Diabetes partnership worth of $4.5m. The partnership also helps train nurses and create awareness among people.
A Diabetes Screening Village is being held today and tomorrow between 4pm and 9pm at Katara to promote healthy living. It offers free Diabetes screening tests, the village will also provide fun, interactive kids games and entertainment, healthy cookery lessons and fitness classes.
