Dates festival ends; 55,000 visit venue

DOHA: Some 55,000 people, including GCC and foreign tourists, visited the Local Dates Festival 2016 which concluded at Souq Waqif yesterday.

 

Over 60 tonnes of dates were sold during the 18-day festival since July 28. 
Nineteen Qatari farms participated in the event, organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment in collaboration with Souq Waqif.
More than 20 varieties of dates were on offer, some of which were sold at low prices — Khalas, Khanizi, Arziz, Barhi, Guar, Khasab and Shishi, among others.
Father Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi and many senior officials visited the festival. 

 

The festival saw good sales compared to the number of farms participating, with 57,160 kg of dates sold until Saturday, including 28,163 kg of Khalas, 9,017 kg of Shishi, 8,692 kg of Barhi and 7,791 kg of Khanizi. The ministry has offered support for upcoming dates festivals. Comments and suggestions of visitors and participants will be taken into account in the coming seasons, the ministry said.
