New York--US stocks opened lower Monday on worries about a potential Greek debt default after talks between Greece and creditors collapsed over the weekend.

Five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 17,710.23, down 188.61 points (1.05 percent).

The broad-based S&P 500 sank 19.45 (0.93 percent) to 2,074.66, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index fell 54.24 (1.07 percent) to 4,996.86

Negotiations between Greece and creditors ended in acrimony Sunday as Athens seeks needed bailout funds to meet a deadline to pay 1.6-billion-euro ($1.8 billion) to the IMF at the end of the month.

Tensions remained high Monday, with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras accusing creditors of "looting" as they pressure Athens to further trim its pension system.
