DOHA: A Qatari woman has donated QR3.1m to Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) to build houses for the impoverished people in Cambodia.
A large number of people in Cambodia are living in huts made of grass and even using small boats as shelters.
With this funding, RAF has launched a project to build a model town comprising 100 homes in the Jarwi Metri Village in the Kandal Province close to Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia.
Each house will be built in an area of 45 square metres with two bedrooms, a hall, kitchen and bathroom.
A school with three classrooms and a mosque will also be built, along with other facilities like roads, parks and green squares. Some 100 families comprising about 600 people are expected to benefit.
“RAF will provide additional financial support to beneficiaries to set up small businesses for their livelihood,” said Dr Ayed bin Dabssan Al Qahtani, Chairman, Board of Trustees and General Director, RAF.
“They will be given fishing boats, animals for breeding, vehicles for commercial uses, among other things, to generate income”, he added.
The town is being developed in collaboration with local partner Jamiyat Al Tawafuq (Al Tawafuq Association).
It is expected to be completed in 18 months, said a representative of the association.
Some of the beneficiary families have been living in wooden boats at the bank of a river while some are sheltered in ramshackle homes made of wood and grass.
