Doha, Qatar: Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library H E Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari has paid a deeply personal and emotional tribute to the late Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as an exceptional leader whose vision transformed Qatar and whose influence will continue to inspire generations.
In a series of posts on X following the passing of the Father Amir, Dr. Al Kawari said Qatar, together with the Arab and Islamic worlds, had lost “an extraordinary leader and a great man” who dedicated his life to serving his homeland and the wider Muslim and Arab nations. He prayed that Allah grant the late Father Amir His infinite mercy and the highest place in Paradise, while also praying for the continued health and success of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in leading Qatar’s ongoing journey of development and prosperity.
Reflecting on decades of close association with the late Father Amir, Al Kawari described him as a statesman whose impact extended far beyond politics. He wrote that some great leaders never truly depart because they become an inseparable part of their nation’s memory and identity, adding that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was one of those rare figures.
Al Kawari said an entire generation in Qatar had grown alongside the Father’s Amir’s ambitious vision, witnessing the country’s remarkable transformation from aspiration to reality. He noted that he had the privilege not only of observing that historic journey but also of participating in it, making the loss deeply personal.
He praised the late leader’s unwavering belief in people, saying Sheikh Hamad always placed human dignity, freedom and the ability to shape the future at the heart of his leadership. According to Al Kawari, the Father Amir consistently demonstrated remarkable foresight, often pursuing bold decisions that initially surprised those closest to him, only for time to prove the wisdom of his judgment.
The Minister also highlighted Sheikh Hamad’s distinctive leadership style, recalling that he entrusted capable individuals with responsibility, gave them full confidence to succeed and closely supported their work while maintaining accountability whenever standards were not met.
Al Kawari further credited the Father Amir with elevating Qatar’s international standing through dialogue, mediation and freedom of expression. He noted that under Sheikh Hamad’s leadership, Qatar became internationally recognised for promoting peaceful dialogue and constructive diplomacy, while institutions such as Al Jazeera reshaped the Arab media landscape.
Beyond his public achievements, Al Kawari remembered the Father Amir’s humility, generosity and loyalty. He recalled how Sheikh Hamad remained approachable despite holding the nation’s highest office, personally checking on friends, offering condolences during difficult times and maintaining lasting relationships built on sincerity rather than protocol.
Sharing intimate memories, Al Kawari recounted one of their final meetings before the Father Amir’s illness worsened, describing how his smile remained stronger than his physical pain. He also revealed that one of the most treasured moments of their friendship was when Sheikh Hamad told him, “You are my friend. You may leave a position, but friendship remains.”
Concluding his tribute, Al Kawari said he was mourning not only a national leader but also a trusted friend.
