Hamad Medical Corporation marks World Social Work Day

DOHA: The Department of Social Services at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently held an event to mark the World Social Work Day under the theme ‘Enhancing the Value and Dignity of People.’ The event was attended by senior officials from the Department of Social Services as well as a number of guests associated with social work in Qatar.
It was held to highlight the important role played by social services in the healthcare field and strengthen communication ties between HMC’s Department of Social Services and Qatar’s social civil organizations. The event was also an opportunity to create wider awareness of the role of social services agencies and social workers and to enable attendees to exchange ideas about their work. In her opening remarks, Haifa’a Al-Hajri, Acting Executive Director of HMC’s Department of Social Services emphasized the role of social services in ensuring human dignity regardless of race, religion and language.  Dr Ranya Fayadh, Acting Director of Social Services for Hospitals highlighted the fundamental basis and principle of respecting human dignity is to ensure patients’ healthcare rights are respected without any racial, religious, economic or social discrimination.
Thomas George, Acting Senior Specialist at the Department of Social Services commented that truly exceptional social work can change a patient’s life. Social workers themselves generate an actual change in a patient and empower him/her to cope in the most challenging of situations. Al Hajri also presented certificates of appreciation to the charitable organizations that support the department’s social work.
