DOHA: A conference on power and water desalination in Arab countries will be held in Doha next week under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The conference is organised by Qatar Society of Engineers, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Industry and the Federation of Arab Engineers on February 22 and 23.
The event will be held under the theme ‘Power Sources and Water Desalination in Arab Countries’.
It is also organised in collaboration with Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Electricity and Water Company.
Between 500 and 600 participants are expected to take part in the conference along with several decisionmakers and officials from institutions and companies in the public and private sectors.
The event aims to exchange ideas between engineering unions and associations in Arab countries and benefit from the experiences gained and lessons learned through the presentation of Arab countries’ experiences in the field.
The conference will discuss more than 20 working papers submitted by 10 Arab countries on issues, including the environmental impact of the operations of the generation and distribution of electricity and drinking water, power plants economies, awareness and rationalisation of production and use of electricity, current reality and future prospects of power plants, water security strategy and techniques of water desalination in Arab countries.
Engineer Said Ahmed Jassim Aljulu, Chairman, Qatar Society of Engineers, told a press conference that the conference is being organised amid the ongoing construction boom in Qatar in preparation to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly with regard to electricity and water desalination projects and challenges faced by world economies in light of falling oil prices. The forum will address challenges faced by Arab countries undergoing rapid development and the increasing demand for electricity and water there.
The Peninsula
