Sri Lankan Majlis Qatar (SLMQ) held its annual symposium last week at Coral Hotel Doha for the 12th consecutive year.
The symposium is the marquee event on the SLMQ calendar. The event has been traditionally graced by a prominent speaker.
The keynote speaker at this year’s event was Mufthi Ismail Ibn Musa Menk from Zimbabwe who spoke on ‘Lessons from the Lives of Companions of Prophet (PBUH) in Community Building’ which was the theme of the evening.
The Treasurer of SLMQ, Hafeel M Zubair, delivered the welcome speech, while the President of SLMQ, Hazim Hamza, in his address to the gathering spoke about achievements and programmes conducted during the year and his vision for the rest of his tenure.
He also highlighted continuous support of members, other associations and the Sri Lanka embassy in Qatar. Jayantha Palipane, Patron of SLMQ and the Ambassador of Sri Lanka, was the Chief Guest.
In his address to the gathering, he commended the SLMQ’s community activities and stressed the importance of Sri Lankan nationals being led by example.
A souvenir was released by Jayantha Palipane after the conclusion of the keynote speech by Mufhti Ismail Menk. A token of appreciation was handed over to Mufthi Ismail Menk by SLMQ President Hazim Hamza.
The symposium was concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Shahard Nazir, Public Relations Coordinator of SLMQ, followed by dinner.
The symposium 2013 was well attended by members of SLMQ and representatives of other Sri Lankan expatriate associations in Qatar, FANAR Islamic Cultural Center and invited dignitaries.
