Over 340 students from 88 schools participated in the Youth Sports Leadership Progamme which is being run by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education offering opportunities to the students to show their leadership skills practically through sports.
Under the programme the young students are being provided proper training for organising sport festivals in their schools and community. A total of 70 expert teachers including 43 female and 27 males are engaged as trainers for the programme. An activity under the programme was held from January 7 to 10, at the rate of six hours in a day.
The youth leadership programme in the field of sport is a pioneering educational development programme in the field of physical and sports education. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education represented by the Department of Physical Education of the Department of Educational Guidance, in cooperation with the British Council’s Training and Development Center, has been running the Youth Sports Leadership programme in Qatar from past two years successfully in providing innovative training.
The programme also aims at developing students’ leadership skills and developing personal skills, teamwork, and enhancing self-confidence. Under the porgamme, the students make plans for a group of activities and games and implement them on their colleagues and hold discussion with them.
The trainees also used their leadership skills which they obtained at an earlier stage of the programme, and through participation in the activities, the students get feeling of being a good citizens. After obtaining training, the students create a young sports leaders club and take on a mission for training more new leaders, organizing sports festivals at their schools and other community events.
Moza Al Badr, Head of the Physical Education Department of the Department of Educational Guidance at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, said in a statement that the trained leaders work through groups to make some changes, starting with themselves, then their schools and the local community, following the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
Al Badr added that leadership skills are strengthened by involving students in designing and implementing sporting activities and programmes in schools, and for the local community in all segments through active participation in sporting activities.
She said that leadership skills are also strengthened by assigning leadership tasks and working within teams in designing and implementing sports festivals and local championships.
Youth Sports Leadership is a 3-year sports programme designed to teach young people essential skills and behaviours such as teamwork, leadership, and persistence in achieving an specific goal.
The Progamme targets the age group of students from 14 to 19 years old. A total of 88 trainers and teachers of sport, and 340 students, from more than 88 schools participated in the programme which has a very positive impact on the participants.
