Sudanis work on a tractor in an experimental rice field that is cultivated as part of the Japanese-backed Gezira rice programme in Wad Medani, south of Khartoum. Newly planted rice shoots poking out of the Sudanese soil are as tiny as blades of grass, but they symbolise a big dream to turn around one of the world’s largest irrigated farming schemes.
