DOHA: A committee is working to make amendments to the environmental law to curb violations.
The most prominent amendments will stipulate increased fines and other penalties against violators, said a senior official at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
Omar Salem Al Nuaimi, Director, Environmental Protection, Nature Reserves and Wildlife Department at the Ministry, said about 70 patrols are working daily to protect the environment from people’s irresponsible behaviours. He said since the beginning of this year the Ministry has registered 206 violations on land and in the sea, Al Sharq reports.
Al Nuaimi said they are working on a study concerning campers who can take back the winter camping insurance amount electronically. The system is expected to apply in the next winter camping season 2016-2017. He said transactions like registration for camping season and paying insurance are done electronically, expect the reimbursement of the insurance amount. He said the Ministry wants to make it easier for them to collect the amount.
The department also plans to increase the number of inspectors by 10 to 15 percent annually to enforce the environmental law and also protect the beaches.
During last season, inspectors registered 23 violations although the number of campers was 2,058, which means the department is serious about curbing irregularities.
