DOHA: Locally produced fruits and vegetables have been found free from pesticide residues, in a research by College of Arts and Science at Qatar University.
Samples of 127 local and imported fruits and vegetables were tested, including tomato, cucumber, parsley (locally known as baqdunas) and Roca leave (locally known as Jarjir), strawberry and lemon.
The samples were found free from any remains of pesticide due to continuous monitoring and awareness drive conducted by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the research said. It recommended a system for checking residues of pesticides in fruits and vegetables to ensure no produce enters the country with residues more than required.
The study also recommended washing fruits and vegetables with acetic acid, salt and soap before eating, Qatar News Agency reports.
The research was presented in a event organised by the Permanent Committee for Farmers and Regulating Farmers’ Affairs at the headquarters of the agriculture sector of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. Research Scholar Nura Mohammad Al Shammari; Dr Fatima Al Naimi, Dean, College of Arts and Science;  other professors from the college and senior officials of the ministry were present.
The research paper was entitled ‘Evaluation of the residues of organic chlorinated pesticides in some local and imported fruits and vegetables’.
