DOHA: Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) three regional hospitals in Al Wakra, Al Khor and Dukhan have been able to significantly reduce the pressure on HMC’s main facility, Hamad General Hospital (HGH), especially its emergency department, say HMC sources.
However, the demand for services at the HGH has also increased as Qatar’s population continues to grow and majority of people live in and around Doha.
“Al Wakra, Al Khor and The Cuban ( in Dukhan) hospitals are bringing quality health care closer to the communities. So patients have to travel to Doha only for complex care,” an HMC spokesman said yesterday citing 2015 data on hospital visits. Last year, Al Wakra Hospital recorded the highest number of visits at its Outpatient Department (OPD). It saw more than 158,000 patients.
The hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) received more than 332,000 cases – a 10 percent increase compared to 2014. Inpatient admissions rose to 58,000, by 65 percent.
Al Khor Hospital recorded more than 96,000 OPD visits during the year. The hospital’s ED saw more than 207,000 cases — a 16 percent increase from the previous year. Inpatient admissions also rose to more than 16,000 — an increase of 22 percent from 2014.
The Cuban Hospital recorded more than 38,000 OPD visits in 2015 and saw a four percent rise in the number of cases seen at the ED. Inpatient admissions rose to 3700, with a 19 percent increase.
At the same time, HGH received more than 558,000 OPD visits and saw an increase of 14 percent in inpatient admissions, with 142,000 cases in 2015.
“Qatar’s population growth led to increased activity across all areas of our hospital network. Our general hospitals in the most populated areas outside Doha, continued to grow and develop. Activity at all three hospitals rose in 2015 compared to the previous year.
Al Khor Hospital recorded a 33 percent increase in births, 19 percent more patients were admitted to The Cuban Hospital and Al Wakra Hospital’s ED treated 9.9 percent more patients. The growth of the hospitals has given patients in the surrounding communities greater options,” said the spokesman.
In 2015, The Cuban Hospital added important new services, including dental prosthetic and orthodontic clinic, a virology/serology laboratory and a new Patient Recovery Hostel. At Al Khor Hospital, a new Wound Care Clinic was established as well as clinics for sleep apnea and snoring, male infertility, musculoskeletal ultrasound and a medical pre-operative clinic to facilitate early assessment. Additional clinics were added in neurology and psychiatry. Al Wakra hospital continued to add new services, including plastic surgery, paediatric day care surgery, family planning clinic, an infertility clinic and audio metric services for newborns.
