DOHA: The Cultural Village Foundation has launched the second edition of the annual ‘Katara Prize for Prophet’s Poets’ which carries a total prize money of QR4.2m.
Inaugurated last year, the prize dedicated to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stresses the significance of Arabic language and poetry in strengthening Arab identity, reviving the heritage of Islamic poetry and linking the young generation with genuine Islamic values.
“ The ‘Katara Prize for Prophet’s Poets’ is an annual prize launched in 2015 by Katara which provides full support and supervision through a committee and adherers to the values of independence and transparency in the selection process,” said Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti.
The inaugural edition saw a total of 828 entries. A ‘local poetry’ category has been launched in addition to ‘classical poetry’ category to give opportunity for more poets to take part.
“We expect more participation for the second edition of the prize because of the new category compared to the previous edition which focused on classical Arabic poetry,” said Dr Al Sulaiti.
The ‘classical poetry’ category carries a total prize of QR2.1m to be distributed among the top three winners. First prize winner will receive QR1m while second prize winner will get QR700,000 and third prize winner will take home QR400,000.
Winners in the ‘local poetry’ category will also receive QR1m, QR700,000 and QR400,000 respectively.
