Qatar is set to launch a research on the quality of air next month. The research announcement came as part of the three-day Green Expo Forum 2016 that concluded here yesterday.
The three-day Green Expo Forum 2016 that opened on Monday brought together experts from International Energy Agency, European Union, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in addition to experts from the government as well as the private sector to discuss various sustainability issues. The forum hosted by Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) in collaboration with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company featured two major events — 'The Carbon and Climate Change Summit' and the 'Sustainable Built Environment Conference'.
“The research will have ground stations to monitor air quality in the country and transmit information through satellite.
"The research will study the wind and dust movement here and the neighbouring countries. With this, coupled with weather information from the satellite, we can study the effects of ground conditions through monitoring,” said Dr Yousef Alhor, founding chairman of GORD to QNA on the sidelines of the conference.
He stressed that the research will accurately register the air condition in Qatar and the effect of regional climate on the air quality here. The research comes as part of the organisation’s strategic plan to study everything on climate change, including the issue of air quality in Qatar.
The research will be undertaken in cooperation with Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Qatar
Mobility Innovation’s Center (QMIC).
The conclusion of the research will be declared next year at Carbon and Climate Change Summit of the event’s next edition.
The Carbon and Climate Change Summit aimed to highlight the climate change challenges in regional and global perspectives.
It also discussed long-term solutions for a low-carbon and climate-resilient future.
The summit aimed to establish a platform for practitioners, experts, regulators and researchers from national and international organisations to share knowledge and ideas for enhancement of climate action and achieve a diversification to low-carbon economy.
