DOHA: For the first time in the Middle East, Qatar will host an International Traffic and Medicine Association (ITMA) Conference.
The 24th World ITMA Congress will be held from November 16 to 18 by the National Traffic Safety Committee.
At a press briefing yesterday, Director of the Traffic Department, Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji said recommendations of experts attending the event will come in handy in reducing the number of deaths and injuries in road accidents.
The focus of the conference will be on accidents in the GCC and ways to reduce them by raising awareness. Traffic safety is a priority of the National Traffic Safety Committee, said its Secretary Brigadier Mohamed Abdullah Al Malki, also Head of the Organising Committee of the event.
He said that two years ago, the National Traffic Safety Committee launched a traffic safety strategy and 35 percent of its goals have been achieved.
The ITMA will hold an exhibition on the sidelines to showcase traffic safety equipment.
More than 100 experts from various countries from across the world will present papers. Delegates will be from countries from across Europe, Asia, North and South Americas and Africa. China will also be represented.
Dr Wafa Al Yazidi said many local entities and experts will also take part. Lt Col Mohamed Radi Al Hajri, Head of Traffic Awareness at the department attended the press meet. The event will be attended by road engineers, police and traffic officers and planners, automobile designers, legal experts and others from over 50 countries.
