Efforts bear fruits as all municipalities certified ‘Healthy Cities’

Doha: The implementation of the comprehensive urban plan for Qatar and investment in infrastructure developing projects following Qatar National Vision 2030, the National Development Strategy, and the Sustainable Strategy of the Ministry of Municipality helped greatly in enabling all municipalities of Qatar to receive the title of ‘Healthy Cities’ by World Health Organization (WHO).

This came in the statements issued by Assistant Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality Mansour Abdullah Zaid Al Mahmoud and directors of all eight municipalities.  

Al Mahmoud underscored that certifying all the municipalities of Qatar as “Healthy Cities” comes as a culmination of the tireless efforts made by many partners concerned with the country, to improve the quality of life.

He pointed out that Qatari cities are characterised by the presence of multiple and interconnected utility networks, with large green spaces, the allocation of pedestrian and bicycle paths, and various means of welfare for the population, which had a significant impact on improving the health of community members, both physically and psychologically.

Director of Doha Municipality Mansour Ajran Al Buainain said that the city of Doha was one of the first cities in Qatar to obtain the “healthy city” accreditation in February, explaining that this achievement came as a result of the efforts of all concerned parties to strengthen partnerships between various sectors in society to improve the health and well-being of the population.

Al Buainain said that 80 indicators have been adopted, according to WHO standards to obtain the “healthy city” accreditation and the accreditation requires achieving 80 percent of the indicators, at least 64 indicators, in nine different axes, including emergency preparedness, community participation, environment, and education, and this is what the city of Doha has deservedly achieved.

Director of Al Rayyan Municipality Jaber Hassan Al Jaber expressed his happiness and pride at the World Health Organization’s accreditation of Qatar’s municipalities, including Al Rayyan municipality, as health cities, because it represents the country’s access to the ranks of developed countries in the quality of services in line with the spirit of the times and decent living.

He said that Al Rayyan municipality includes many vital facilities that provide health-promoting programmes and services such as green spaces and sustainable vital facilities, in addition to urban transport represented by the use of bicycles, pedestrian paths and an environmentally friendly tram system.

Mohammed Hassan Al Nuaimi said that Al Wakra has all the capabilities that qualified it to obtain the title of “Healthy City”, as it came after proper planning and implementation of the requirements within the QNV 2030 strategy to provide decent and healthy care for all.
Al Nuaimi explained that the concept of Al Wakra “Healthy City” is not limited to the health sector, but is an integrated system of standards, services and initiatives that improve the quality and lifestyle of all members of the community, from all health, social, environmental and economic aspects.

In the same context, the Director of Umm Salal Municipality Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani said that Umm Salal’s victory with the title of a “Healthy City” is an achievement that all are proud of to provide a safe, healthy and educational environment for the well-being of the municipality’s residents and future generations.

He pointed to the efforts of the municipality that qualified it to obtain this accreditation from the World Health Organization, including providing public facilities and parks, paying attention to their development, providing a theatre for events, ensuring that the city is a good environment for the people of the region.

Director of Al Daayen Municipality, Rashid Mishlash Al Khayarin, said that adopting Al Daayen as a “Health City” means providing an integrated system of services to achieve all means to improve the health, well-being and happiness of the residents of the municipality’s areas.

Al Khayarin pointed out the most prominent initiatives that helped Al Daayen municipality to obtain this title, including the presence of Lusail city, the Sustainable City, the effective role of raising awareness of school students and the public in general, caring for people with special needs, raising their awareness and involving them in all events.

Director of Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality Eng. Abdullah Ibrahim Al Sada, said that the municipality of Al Khor and Al Thakhira’s title of the “Health City” from the WHO is a great achievement and the fruit of the hard work of all departments in the municipality.

He pointed out that the municipality has employed its efforts in achieving the comprehensive concept of “Healthy Cities” by providing a sustainable environment, establishing a large number of green spaces, parks and public parks, allocating places for sports, paying attention to public hygiene and waste recycling, instilling health awareness for community members.

Director of Al Shamal Municipality, Hamad Juma Al Mannai, explained that the victory of Al Shamal city as a “Healthy City” was the culmination of concerted work between the municipality and the relevant State institutions, and enhances the concept of health and its social determinants as an urban issue that requires commitment, cooperation and continuity between all State institutions to ensure the health and well-being of the region’s residents.

He praised the efforts of the municipality and its participation in various events aimed at promoting the concept of sustainable development among school students, pointing out that the municipality of Al Shamal has obtained membership in the Unesco Network of Learning Cities, which contributed to supporting the municipality to obtain the title of a “Healthy City”.

Director of Al Sheehaniya Municipality, Saleh Hamad Al Hadwan, confirmed that Al Sheehaniya municipality’s accreditation of WHO for “Health Cities” came to meet the conditions and standards set by the organisation, through the implementation of the comprehensive urban plan of  Qatar by increasing green spaces, parks, sports tracks, ease of access to all services, and ensuring a sustainable ecosystem.

He reiterated that the municipality of Al Sheehaniya has recently intensified the planting of trees and green spaces and facilitated public access to all services provided, and the awareness team in the municipality has made periodic visits to schools to provide educational awareness lectures to students.
