(The Sports Xchange) - St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter will sit out the weekend series against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to "extreme fatigue", manager Mike Matheny said Friday.
Matheny also said Carpenter was dealing with an accelerated heart rate.
Carpenter, 29, left Sunday's game against the Pirates following the seventh inning after experiencing lightheadedness. He had an accelerated heart rate and dehydration.
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto was suspended for the Reds' game against the Chicago White Sox on Friday for bumping an umpire earlier this week.
Votto bumped home-plate umpire Chris Conroy on Wednesday night during the first inning of the Reds' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After Votto struck out swinging against right-hander Gerrit Cole to end the inning, he slammed his bat and helmet to the ground. Votto then said something to Cole, but Conroy thought Votto was talking to him and ejected the first baseman as he walked to his position.
Votto charged toward Conroy and bumped into him before he could be intercepted by Reds manager Bryan Price.
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb will have season-ending Tommy John surgery after additional tests determined he has a complete tear in an elbow ligament.
Cobb will undergo surgery Thursday and is targeting a return in September 2016.
Cobb felt tightness in his right forearm, diagnosed as tendinitis, during a spring training start against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Kansas City Royals placed left-hander Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left flexor.
The team also placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the three-day bereavement list, activated shortstop Alcides Escobar off the seven-day concussion list and recalled right-hander Yohan Pino from Triple-A Omaha to replace catcher Francisco Pena, who was sent down Thursday.
Vargas, 32, is 3-1 with a 5.26 ERA in five starts this season. He pitched six innings Tuesday, allowing two hits and two runs as he won for a second straight start.
The Baltimore Orioles said right-hander Kevin Gausman will go on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Gausman, 24, moved from the rotation to the bullpen this year and had recorded a 4.50 ERA while striking out 13 and walking five in 12 innings.
Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton will begin an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
The Rangers did not say how long Hamilton will be on the rehab assignment, but they have said he is on track to be activated from the DL in late May.
Hamilton, who has been out all season since undergoing shoulder surgery in February, went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in an extended spring game Friday in Surprise, Ariz.
The Rangers acquired Hamilton from the Los Angeles Angels last week.
Cincinnati Reds minor-league pitchers David Ayala and Adolfi Telleria were suspended for 25 games and free-agent pitcher Dawson Brown received a 50-game ban for violation of baseball's drug program.
The reason for the pitchers' suspensions was not given by the commissioner's office. Brown's punishment resulted from a second positive test for a drug of abuse.
The 20-year-old Ayala and the 21-year-old Telleria are right-handers and pitch for the Reds' Dominican Summer League team.
The 21-year-old Brown was released by the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday after going 1-0 with a 2.75 ERA in 11 relief outings last year for their Arizona Rookie League team.
