DOHA: Qatar Charity has implemented 1,753 income-generating projects over the past decade for poor people in Aceh region of Indonesia, including 43 projects executed last year.
Cows, tailoring machines, carpentry tools and pickup vehicles, among others, were distributed to the beneficiaries to help them earn a livelihood for them and their families. The project is aimed at improving the living conditions of poor families by helping them turn productive so they could be self-dependent and lead a happy life with dignity, said a post on the QC website yesterday.
During first quarter of this year, QC provided three tailoring machines and a cow to limited income people through its office in Indonesia.
Aceh (Atjeh) region was selected for such projects because a large number of poor people (some 859,000) are living there. Unemployment rate in this region is high at 9.93 percent due to natural disasters like earthquake, floods, landslides and storms.
The projects were financed through donations made by philanthropists in Qatar. They helped the beneficiaries set up their own businesses to meet their daily expenses, said Operation Manager at QC, Faysal Al Fahid.
One of the beneficiaries received a tailoring machine. The woman requested for help through the office of QC in Indonesia . She was running a small tailoring shop. The tsunami that hit the region in 2004 disrupted her business. She was working with an old tailoring machine but the income was too small to meet the basic needs of her family.
She also needed money to pay school fees of her two sons. The request for a new tailoring machine was submitted in February, 2016. A field survey was conducted which found the request genuine. Then the machine was handed to the woman after a few days.
