Doha: Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, Dr. Rolph Payet, said that Qatar's experience in managing hazardous chemicals and gases represents a global model to be emulated, as it has demonstrated impressive progress in strategic regulation and chemical risk management, with a focus on innovation and modern technology.

In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the Chemical Safety Symposium organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Payet noted that Qatar has not only limited itself to the regulatory aspect, but has also adopted tangible practical innovations, including recycling glass from leftover food and converting waste into useful resources, reflecting its commitment to environmental safety and sustainable development.

He said that the projects launched by Qatar in this field represent a model that other countries can benefit from to develop their national capacities in chemical risk management.

Qatar has demonstrated its ability to integrate this comprehensive approach between the environment, the economy, and technology, a unique and distinctive experience regionally and internationally.

He added that Qatar is building a strong capacity to manage chemical risks, making it an ideal partner in global efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainable development by combining careful regulation, technological innovation, and international cooperation.

Through organizing international events, Qatar has also demonstrated how the government and youth can together leverage technology and innovation in regulating and managing chemicals, he added.

Dr. Payet explained that the Qatari experience represents a clear message to the world that economic development and environmental protection can go hand in hand.

He emphasized the importance of building national capacities and continuing to learn and innovate, focusing on the big picture, not just a small part.

He added that the primary message to young people and officials in Qatar is to continue on this path, because technology and knowledge are the only way to improve chemical management, protect society, and achieve sustainable and effective results.

Dr. Payet also noted that international cooperation has played a pivotal role in enhancing expertise, citing his experience with global sports organizations, which has allowed for the transfer and implementation of best practices, including taxation and regulations, and ways to recover a portion of taxes and regulate technology in hospitals.

He added that technology has become an absolute necessity, as digital systems and the internet help regulate and monitor chemicals more efficiently in various sectors, from health to development and industry.

He pointed out that this smart use of technology enhances national capacity, adds value to the local economy, and makes chemical risk management more effective and sustainable.

The Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions concluded his statement to QNA by stressing that chemicals are not merely hazardous substances that threaten the environment, but are closely linked to economic and industrial development.

He explained that the daily-used chemicals are linked to a country's economic development, and proper management of these substances helps strengthen local industries and achieve sustainable development.
