Doha, Qatar: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) welcomed the issuance Sunday by Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani of Law No. 22 of 2025 on persons with disabilities.

The new law would promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities, in terms of its alignment with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as well as the advanced provisions put out in that law, said Chairperson of NHRC, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah.

Al Attiyah added that these provisions include ensuring the full and effective engagement of persons with disabilities in the community, empowering them to equally exercise all rights and freedoms with others, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of or due to disability, achieving equal opportunities, including them in the community, and guaranteeing the upholding of their dignity and personal autonomy.

The law, likewise, stipulates respect for the rights of children with disabilities, safeguards their identity, advances their capabilities and skills, in addition to fostering their inclusion and engagement in the community, Her Excellency highlighted.

Al Attiyah reiterated the NHRC’s commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders, including persons with disabilities, to ensure the effective enforcement of this law and address any updated challenges in this respect.

The committee is satisfied with the State of Qatar’s reaction with international human rights mechanisms, particularly those concerned with protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, Al Attiyah underlined.

She noted that the enactment of this law underscores the State of Qatar’s commitment to positively reacting with the recommendations of those mechanisms, along with its vital stature in the human rights field on the regional and global stages.
