DOHA: Qatar has a lower e-economic crimes rate compared to other countries due to effective prevention measures and the use of new technologies, said a senior official at the Ministry of Interior.
First-Lieutenant Madawi Saeed Al Qahtani, officer, Cyber Crime Combating Centre, Criminal Investigation Department, said the department has enhanced its role in combating e-economic crimes and is using the latest devices to combat them.
He was speaking at an ‘e-Economic Crimes’ symposium on economy and education at Qatar National Convention Centre, held under the patronage of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Qatar Central Bank.
To avoid such crimes, the department trains and qualifies employees to handle such cases, he said.
Since its launch, the centre has succeeded in combating e-economic crimes such as defamation, electronic piracy, stealing credit card numbers and spreading rumours.
The Ministry of Interior has also enhanced its role in combating forgery of credit cards by using information technology to protect the national economic in addition to raising awareness about the risks of the Internet.
Al Qahtani said Internet users should avoid sharing personal information such as location of their homes, and cancel the ‘option’ to find such locations. He also urged the public to activate the latest antivirus in the computer and use programmes to protect personnel and family information and monitor people who exchange communication with children, including banned messages.
