Cairo: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher discussed the humanitarian conditions arising from a variety of crises in the region, particularly in the Gaza Strip and Sudan, in the phone call on Wednesday.
During the call, Abdelatty stressed the importance of ramping up global efforts to ensure full access of humanitarian, medical, and relief aid to the Gaza enclave, in addition to lifting the Israeli hinderances that impede the access of this aid adequately amid the harsh winter conditions, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry reported in a statement.
Abdelatty further emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and surging the essential aid, including relief items and caravans, to mitigate the suffering of Gazans.
He noted that it is essential to implement the gains of the second phase of US President Donald Trump's plan and initiate the early recovery and rebuilding efforts.
Addressing the humanitarian developments in Sudan, Abdelatty stressed the importance of providing safe shelters and ensuring the unhindered access of humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan. He called out the gross massacres and violations committed against the civilians in El‑Fasher and North Kordofan.
In addition, Abdelatty emphasized that Egypt fully supports the operations of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), alongside its pivotal role in enhancing effective response to the humanitarian crises in the region.
He likewise underscored his country's support for protecting civilians and monitoring the abuses, whether in the occupied Palestinian territories or Sudan, stressing that it is important to persistently uphold close coordination with the UN and its specialized agencies to mitigate civilian suffering and supporting regional stability.
